The presence of oil above a predetermined pressure in a chamber 29 effects movement of the pistons 25 and 26 against the bias of a spring 28 to connect the valve rockers 5 and 7 to the rocker 6. The cam operating the rocker 6 may provide a greater lift and opening duration to the intake or exhaust valves than the cams operating the rockers 5 and 6. A pump (40, Fig. 6) provides oil at a pressure varying directly with engine speed through a solenoid valve (43) which is de-energised to open during high speed engine operation so that the oil pressure moves the pistons 25 and 26. The output pressure of the pump provides for piston operation or return dependent on engine speed even if the solenoid valve fails to operate. <IMAGE>
