The electrical switch, which is preferably provided for installation in an electric hand tool and has a switching mechanism (1) of conventional type has an operating device (3) which can pivot against the force of a restoring spring (16). In addition, the operating device (3) can be displaced against the force of an additional restoring spring (19) whose line of action runs approximately at right angles to that of the restoring spring (16). For this purpose, the operating device (which is constructed as a single-armed lever) is supported by means of a bolt (10) and at least one elongated hole (12) such that it can rotate and can be displaced, the longitudinal axis of the elongated hole running approximately in the direction of the line of action of the additional restoring spring (19). A switching-on inhibiting device (25) prevents undesired operation of the switch, for example in the event of an electric hand tool which is equipped with such a switch being placed down or lifted up. A switching-off inhibiting device (32) makes it possible to latch the operating device (3) in the changeover position of the switching mechanism (1). In addition, a device is also provided which makes it harder to reset the operating device (3), as a result of the force of the spring (16), in the event of the manual force being reduced and the operating device (3) not being latched. This device consists essentially of a steel bolt (31) and a resetting incline (30) on the inhibiting element (26). <IMAGE>
