Cathode for a molten-salt electrolysis cell

To reduce the interpolar distance in molten-salt electrolysis cells for extracting aluminium, plates or layers containing titanium diboride are bonded to carbon blocks forming the base of the cell. The durability of the adhesive bond is not adequate and the service life is to be increased by a new joint. Titanium diboride plates (8) are joined by a key-type joint to carbon blocks (3). Carbon blocks fitted with titanium diboride plates are suitable as cathodes for aluminium electrolysis cells. <IMAGE>
