PURPOSE:To start reading from a prescribed position without errors by abutting on a travelling original, detecting a shift quantity and starting reading as soon as the shift quantity reaches a prescribed value. CONSTITUTION:A titled equipment is constituted in such a way that a shift quantity detection means 18 is provided in proximity to a feedout roller 3 and an original 1 which has been separated in the roller 3 and has been fed out enters between a detection roller 19 and a pinch roller 20 to rotate the roller 19. With the shift of the original 1 by the roller 3, a rotary encoder 21 generates a pulse signal which is proportional to the shift quantity through the roller 19. The number of the generated pulses from the encoder is counted, and if the number of the pulses reaches a prescribed number, the reading of the original 1 starts. Consequently, the original 1 passes through a clearance between guide boards 11' and 12' and reaches a reading position. A read means 17 reads the contents from the position where a tip part overreaches for prescribed quantity. Thus, reading can be started from the prescribed position without errors.
