PURPOSE:To obtain a polyimide thioether good in heat and oxidation resistance by a simple process comprising only two steps, by reacting a specified dinitro compound with a sulfiding agent in an organic solvent. CONSTITUTION:A dinitro compound synthesized from 3-nitrophthalic anhydride or 4-nitrophthalic anhydride and an aliphatic diamine and represented by formula I is reacted with a sulfiding agent in an organic solvent to obtain an aliphatic polyimide thioether containing an imide ring structure and sulfur in the main chain, represented by formula II. In the formulas, R is an aliphatic compound residue, the bonding positions of the -NO2 groups are 3,3' or 4,4', the bonding positions of the -S- are 3,3' or 4,4' and n>=3. Examples of the sulfiding agents used include alkali metal sulfide compounds and a combination of a sulfur source and an alkali metal hydroxide compound.
