The asbestos may be coated with a hydrophobic material, such as an organic titanate, by dispersing it in an organic solvent containing the material, filtering and drying to remove solvent, when a film of TiO 2 is deposited; examples of suitable titanates are given. Or the asbestos may be coated with a long chain fluorocarbon in a similar way. The additive may also contain a small amount of a surface active dispersing agent. It may be used in water- or oil-based packer fluids.
