PURPOSE:To permit dealing with three-dimensional external forces by disposing 3 pieces of freely rotatably balls on the same circumference in such a manner that the central angles of the adjacent balls do not exceed a specific angle and moving the respective balls synchronously in a diametral direction, thereby expanding the range for gripping a work. CONSTITUTION:This centering steady rest is set to the free end of a cylindrical base material which rotates and expands thermally in; for example, plasma thermal spraying. Three pieces of the freely rotatable balls 13-15 are disposed on the same circumference of the above-mentioned steady rest by means consisting of a driving shaft 29, spur gears 30, 26, 27, screws 18, 19, 28 supporting arms 16, 17 and ball bearings 10-12 in such a manner that the max. central angle alpha of the adjacent balls does not exceed 180 deg.. The respective balls are cooperatively moved synchronously in the diametral direction (e.g., 13r-15r). As a result, the range for gripping the work W is expanded and the dealing with the three-dimensional external forces is permitted.
