PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound advantageously in subjecting dicyclopentadiene to hydroformylation by the use of a cobalt compound and phosphine as a catalyst, by using a hydrocarbon solvent and cooling a reaction mixture to separate the catalyst in a solvent phase. CONSTITUTION:Dicyclopentadiene is subjected to hydroformylation by the use of a cobalt compound and phosphine as a catalyst to give tricyclodecanedimethylol useful as a raw material of nonsolvent type lacquer having high hardness by using the inexpensive catalyst at low pressure and at one stage. In the production, a saturated hydrocarbon and/or an aromatic hydrocarbon is used as a reaction solvent and, after the reaction is used as a reaction solvent, and after the reaction is over, the reaction mixture is cooled and separated into a catalyst-containing solvent phase and the aimed reaction product phase. The catalyst and the solvent are separated from the aimed substance by one action. Then the separated solvent phase is circulated to the reaction system and the aimed compound is obtained industrially advantageously.
