PURPOSE:To confirm an accurate position, by a method wherein a wound coil is irradiated with light when the leading end of the coil is detected in order to unwind the coil from the leading end thereof and the image of the reflected light from the coil is picked up by a camera and subjected to image processing to form a light and shaded binarized image to know steep light and shade change. CONSTITUTION:A drum like coil 1 bundled by a hoop 3 is mounted on a mount device 2 composed of a cradle in a freely rotatable manner and an illuminator 4 having a light source having directionality and uniform in the lateral direction thereof is arranged above the coil 1. Next, the light from the illuminator 4 is allowed to irradiate the coil 1 to form shade due to the difference in level on the outer peripheral surface of the coil 1 and the image of said shade is picked up by a television camera 5 or a unidimensional line sensor to obtain an image signal which is, in turn, inputted to an A/D converter 6. Thereafter, the output signal of said converter 6 is sent to a memory and operation apparatus 7 having a memory part 8 and an operation part 9 mounted therein to form a binarized image of which the edge is emphasized and said image is synthesized along with a binarized light and shaded image prepared to sharply detect the difference in level at the leading end of the coil.
