NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R<1> is 1-20C alkyl or alkoxy; R<2> is 1-18C alkyl; m is 0 or 1; * is asymmetric carbon). EXAMPLE:(+ or -)-4-(2'-Cyano-hexyloxycarbonyl)-phenyl-4'-octyloxy-4-biphenylcarboxyla te. USE:An ingredient of ferroelectric liquid crystal composition, suitable as the ingredient carrying spontaneous polarization value of the ferroelectric liquid crystal composition. PREPARATION:A compound obtained from an optically active alpha-amino acid expressed by formula I is esterified and a hydroxyl group of the resultant compound is protected with tetrahydropyranyl, then reduced, esterified, deprotected and tosylated to afford a compound expressed by formula II, which is then substituted with a cyano group to provide a compound expressed by formula I (m is 0).
