PURPOSE:To recognize the state of reception fault at a sender side by character synthenizing a faulty state and forming the character in a prescribed format and sending from the sender if the fault takes place during the reception of a picture signal. CONSTITUTION:A reception circuit including a signal reception means 1 is connected to a communication line and if a fault is generated during the reception of the picture signal, a control circuit blocks the reception circuit and switches the connection to a communication line to a transmission circuit including a signal transmission means 8. A format forming means 7 receives a sender address from a signal reception means 1, control station information including received sheet number information from a recording control means 3 and faulty state information of the mechanism from a fault detection mans 6 respectively to collect the prescribed information and forms the format of present pattern by the character synthesis. Then a signal sending means 8 is driven to convert the formed pattern format into a serial picture signal and sends it to the sender.
