PURPOSE:To prepare not only a high performance stretched article efficiently and stably but also a stretched article having a relatively large cross-sectional area, by a method wherein a sinter of macromolecular polyethylene powder having high flexibility is subjected to preheating/wetting treatment under a specific condition and subsequently subjected to dipping/swelling treatment in a heated solvent before cooling and stretching. CONSTITUTION:A sintered body obtained from polyethylene having wt. average molecular weight of 1X10<6> or more is subjected to preheating/wetting treatment. Next, the sinter is dipped in a solvent capable of swelling said polyethylene and heated to a temp. range from the melting starting temp. of polyethylene or more to temp. below the b.p. of the solvent to be swollen. Next, the treated sinter is solidified under cooling and subsequently stretched under a condition imparting a draw ratio of 10 times or more. By this method, stretching can be uniformly performed up to a high draw ratio and a stretched article having a relatively large cross-sectional area and high strength and high modulus of elasticity is obtained.
