PURPOSE:To reduce misuse of words due to the mistaken selection of synonyms and to improve the quality of a document in the preparation of a Japanese document by storing information on the meanings of synonyms and their examples in a synonym dicitionary memory and displaying synonyms together with the information and the examples at the time of displaying the synonyms. CONSTITUTION:When a KANA (Japanese syllabary) string is inputted through a keyboard 1 to depress a KANJI (Chinese character) conversion key, a KANA/ KANJI conversion part 3 refers to a Japanese dictionary memory 2, converts the KANA string into KANJI's, writes it in a text memory 7 and simultaneously displays the KANJI string on a screen 9. In that state, an operator specifies a cursor and presses a synonym conversion key 12 in order to rewrite 'Dear Sirs' to another synonym. Then a synonym conversion part 5 and a control part 10 retrieves a synonym dictionary memory 4 with 'Dear Sirs' as a header, read and hold all related synonym, the meaning information and the examples in a synonym buffer 6, and simultaneously display them on a write screen 9 from a conversion start character position in the text memory 7. When everything looks good, the operator presses an execution key 13.
