PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer having excellent heat-resistance and moldability, at a low cost, by carrying out the polycondensation of a specific bis(6-chloro-2-pyridyloxy) compound and an aromatic dihydroxy compound in the presence of an alkali metal carbonate, etc., under anhydrous condition. CONSTITUTION:The objective polymer of formula III (n is an integer of >=10 representing the polymerization degree) can be produced by the polycondensation of (A) a bis(6-chloro-2-pyridyloxy) compound of formula I (X is phenylene, naphthylene, diphenyl ether, diphenyl sulfide, diphenyl sulfone, etc.) and (B) an equimolar amount of a dihydroxy compound of formula II (Y is phenylene, diphenyl, diphenyl ether, diphenyl sulfone, naphthylene, etc.) in the presence of an alkali metal (bi)carbonate or hydroxide under anhydrous condition.
