摘要 PURPOSE:To make a high-contrast display by specifying the ranges of the twist angle of liquid crystal molecules between substrates, the angle between the orientation direction of liquid crystal molecules on substrate surfaces and the transmission or absorption axis of a nearby polarizer, and the product of the refractive index anisotropy and thickness of the liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:An upper substrate 11 where a transparent electrode 13 and an orienting film 15 and a lower substrate 21 where a transparent electrode 23 and an orienting film 25 are formed are arranged opposite each other at an interval, and the liquid crystal 31 is charged between the both to constitute a liquid crystal cell 10; and an upper polarizing plate 41 and a lower polarizing plate 43 are arranged on both sides of the liquid crystal cell 10 to constitute a liquid crystal display element. In this case, the twist angle alpha of liquid crystal display molecules is specified between 180 and 250 deg., the angle between the orientation direction of liquid crystal molecules on each substrate and the transmission or absorption axis of the polarizer nearby the substrate is 30-60 deg., and then an expression holds for the product d.DELTAn(mum) of the refractive index anisotropy DELTAn of the liquid crystal and liquid crystal thickness (d) at room temperature. Consequently, the large-contrast liquid crystal display element is obtained.
