PURPOSE:To form a low pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp of a long service life, by enclosing 7 to 15 mmHg of a mixture gas of at least one of Kr and Xe, and Ar, or a mixture gas adding Ne to the above mixture gas. CONSTITUTION:The relation between the enclosed rare gas Ar and the service life of a low pressure discharge lamp is that the lamp becomes to the practical use level by increasing the sealing pressure to 7 mmHg or higher, for example, when the lamp is lighted by an inverter circuit without preheating the electrode. On the other hand, when a choke ballast lighting is used, the lamp voltage rises as the sealing pressure increases, and when the power source voltage is 100 V, for example, the upper limit value of not generating a reaction of a glow bulb is, 6 mmHg at 8 W, 7 mmHg at 6 W, and 10 mmHg at 4 W. By mixing a gas such as Kr, Xe, or Ne to the Ar gas, the lamp voltage is reduced, and the lamp operates effectively by making the sealing pressure more than 7 mmHg and less than 15 mmHg.
