PURPOSE:To obtain a polymeric substance having specified monomer units, excelling in stability in a solvent, having optical activity and being useful as an optical resolution agent. CONSTITUTION:An addition reaction is effected between 9-acetoxyanthracene obtained by reacting anthrone with acetic anhydride in a solvent (e.g., pyridine) and benzyne to form a triptycene skeleton, the acetate group is reduced with a reducing agent (e.g., lithium hydride), and the resulting hydroxyl group is methacryloylated to give 9-triptycenyl methacrylate (A). Component A is anion- polymerized at -78-0 deg.C, preferably, -50--30 deg.C in a solvent (e.g., toluene) in the presence of a polymerization catalyst (B) as an optically active anionic catalyst [e.g., (+)-2,3-dimethoxy-1,4-bisdimethylaminobutane-n-butyllithium] to give a polymeric substance having monomer units of the formula having an average MW of 1,000-50,000, a dispersivity <=1.5, and a specific rotation (in tetrahydrofuran) >=3 deg. (absolute value).
