[Also in Division E2] An automatic safety device in a vehicle comprising control means 18 for opening and closing doors, a two-way manual emergency switch 8, door jamb switches 7, an automatic brake control 31, a vehicle-speed sensitive switch 23 and signal means 12, 33, comprises a control unit incorporating two multiple-contact relays 1, 2 and a two-contact adjustable time-delay relay 3 responsive to disconnection of a terminal f of its energizing coil 3e from earth, the other coil terminal d being connected to a voltage source, suitable connections being provided between the control unit and the signal means and control switches and other means. In operation when the vehicle slows to e.g. below 2 m.p.h. the switch 23 closes operating signal light 12 until a door unlocking push button 11 is operated thereby energizing the coil 1e and operating the first relay 1, putting out the light 12 and connecting the door opening switch 16 to the power source through the relay arm 1a. Closing of the switch 16 energizes one or more electromagnetic door valves 18 to open the doors. As a first door opens a respective jamb switch 7 is closed thereby energizing the coil 2e to close the relay 2 and hence energize an automatic brake valve 31, a brake indicator light 33 and the coil 3e of the relay 3 through relay contacts 2a and 1c and switch 23. The doors are closed by opening switch 16 and opening of the jamb switches 7 de-energizes the relay 2, thereby opening contacts 2b, to de-energize the relay 1 and hence illuminate the light 12 again, and 2a, to disconnect terminal f of the relay 3 from earth which actuates the time delay 4. The two lights 12, 33 together denote operation of the time-delay and that the brake valve 31 and door switch 16 are still connected to the power source through the relay contacts 3a and 3c. If during this period a door sensitive-edge was actuated a door jamb switch 7 would then be closed to re-energize the relays. Normally at the end of the time delay the brakes are released and the vehicle may proceed. The two-way switch 8 permits energization of the switch 16 through a conductor 14 should there be a failure in the relays or associated components.
