PURPOSE:To reduce a mass of moving material due to transportation of an original paper and simplify the structure of an image reading scanner, by putting an original paper on a flexible carrying sheet and reading out an image on the original paper while transporting it on a carrying path which can be opened upward. CONSTITUTION:In the case of reading a three dimensional original 26, at first step, rotating upward a guide unit 19 to open a carrying path 3 and using a handle 10a a flexible carrying sheet 10 is pulled out from a winding roller 12 onto an original paper table 2 through a roller axis 11 of the top edge of a discharge tray 9 to hold and pinch a three dimensional original 26. At the next step, the winding roller 12 is driven by a motor to wind a carrying sheet 10, reading it at a reading position 15 by a photoelectric converter element 18 during transportation of the three dimensional original 26, and when a shading mark 13a is detected by a sensor 13, transportation is stopped and the tree dimensional original 26 is discharged on a discharge tray 9. And in the case of reading a sheet original, the guide unit 19 is closed, then the sheet original is sent into from the original paper table 2. Thus a mass of moving material due to transportation of an original paper is reduced and a structure can be simplified and miniaturized.
