PURPOSE:To provide a water-soluble additive which is excellent in defoaming properties and has both bactericidal and rust preventive properties and suited for use as an additive for a cutting oil, a rust preventive, a hydraulic lubricant, etc. and which comprises a particular phenoxyacetic acid derivative as an active ingredient. CONSTITUTION:The desired water-soluble additive is prepd. by incorporating as an active ingredient a compd. of the formula (wherein R<1>-R<3> are each H or a 1-2C hydrocarbon residue; n is 1-2; and X is H, Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Ba, an NH4 group, or an amine-neutralized N-ammonium group). Examples of the compd. of the formula include phenoxyacetic acid, sodium methylphenoxyacetate, diethanolammonium ethylphenoxyacetate, etc. Moreover, an additive, such as a dissolution auxiliary (e.g., sodium alkylsulfate), an extreme-pressure agent, a disinfectant, a pressure-sensitive adhesive, etc., may be added. |
