PURPOSE:To facilitate the treatment of a highly viscous material to thereby obtain a product of stable quality in good efficiency, by feeding highly viscous reaction solutions to a horizontal reactor equipped with two parallel agitator shafts each of which is fitted with a plurality of specified impellers in such a manner that the impellers on one shaft are rectangular to those on the other shaft from both of its ends, reacting them with each other and discharging the product from the middle of the reactor. CONSTITUTION:A horizontal reactor is constructed as follows. The body 1 of a cylindrical reactor provided with a heating jacket 2 is equipped with agitator shafts 6a and 6b which rotate in the opposite directions so that they may be parallel with each other and a plurality of impellers 9a and 9b each comprising a ring support plate 7 and a scraper plate 8 fixed on its top at an angle theta with the support plate 7 and symmetrically fixed to the shafts at a right angle so that the phase angle between the impellers of each pair may be 90 deg.. Reaction solutions such as highly viscous monomers are fed to this reactor from liquid feed inlets 3a and 3b on its ends and are allowed to move, with heating, toward the middle by the rotation of the impellers 9a and 9b in the direction from the inside of the reactor to the outside, as shown by the arrows, and by the inclination of the scraper plate 8 of an angle theta, and the formed vapor is discharged from a volatile matter outlet 5. The highly viscous reaction product is withdrawn from a liquid outlet 4 provided so that no deadspace is formed in the internal solution.
