PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having improved runnability and good durability by subjecting the surface part of a thin ferromagnetic metallic film to a dilute nitric acid treatment, then forming a protective layer consisting of a compd. of thiols or thioglycolic acids thereon. CONSTITUTION:The surface part of the thin ferromagnetic metallic film provided on a nonmagnetic substrate is subjected to the dilute nitric acid treatment and further, the protective layer contg. at least one kind of the compd. of thiols or thioglycolic acids expressed by the formula (A) or (B) is formed atop the same. R is a hydrocarbon group of 12-24C or fluorinated hydrocarbon group of 8-16C. Namely, the magnetic recording medium is constituted of the nonmagnetic substrate 1, the thin ferromagnetic metallic film 2 and the protective layer 3 contg. >=1 kinds of the compd. of thiols or thioglycolic acids. The magnetic recording medium having the good runnability and wear resistance with a magnetic head, etc., is thereby obtd.
