PURPOSE:To miniaturize a device and to shorten a reading time, by driving the device in its own start up area, performing through-up and through-down with the output of a counter carrier after the prescribed time of stopping, and stopping the device at the initial position of its own start up area at the time of forward rotation. CONSTITUTION:The number of driving pulses are set at a counter 11 corresponding to a length in the subscan direction of the required area of an original, and also, a main scan synchronizing signal is inputted to the counter 11 via a count clock switching means 12, An optical system 1 is driven in its own start up area(1/T) of a motor synchronizing with one main scan cycle T, then reads the original. When a carrier signal is outputted from the counter 11, the motor 2 is stopped for a prescribed time, and after that, it is rotated in a reverse direction, and is driven until a time when an initial position detecting sensor 7 detects the initial position of the optical system 1 by using the through-up and the through-down. After detection, the motor, after being rotated reversely in its own start up area, is rotated forward, and detects the initial position and stops. Therefore, it is possible to miniaturize the device and to shorten the reading time without moving the optical system to a position other than the required area of the original.
