PURPOSE:To increase the effect to rub a toner into paper fibers by making the surface speed of a fixing roll, which is brought into contact with the toner image formed on a recording paper, out of a pair of downstream fixing rolls higher than the recording paper carrying speed of a pair of upstream fixing rolls. CONSTITUTION:The toner image on a recording paper 3 inserted in a fixing device 6 along a path 8 is fixed with pressure by a pair of upstream rolls 61. The recording paper 3 is pressurized between a pair of downstream rolls 62, and the recording paper is strained between this pair of rolls 62 and a pair of upstream rolls 61 because the surface speed of a toner image-side roll 62A of a pair of rolls 62 is higher than the recording paper carrying speed of a pair of upstream rolls 61. Since the pressure between a pair of downstream rolls 62 is set to a value smaller than that between a pair of upstream rolls, slip is caused between surfaces of downstream rolls and the surface of the paper, and the shearing force is applied to a toner layer on the recording paper by this slip, and the effect to rub the toner into fibers of the paper is attained to improve the fixability furthermore.
