NEW MATERIAL:The 2-(2-fluoroalkyl)-2,5,12-trihydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaph- thacene-6,11-dione derivative of formula I (R<1> is H or hydroxy; R<2> and R<3> together with bonded C form a cyclic or acyclic acetal or together represent an oxygen atom). USE:Useful as a production intermediate for the synthesis of 14-fluoro-4- demethoxydaunoribucin having excellent carcinostatic activity. PREPARATION:The compound of formula Ia can be produced according to the reaction formula by reacting the compound of formula II with a bromination agent and reacting the product with a fluoride. The obtained compound of formula Ia can be converted to the compound of formula Ib by reacting with a trialkoxymethane in the presence of e.g. trimethylsilyl triflate.
