PURPOSE:To continuously separate and recover crude anthracene, by cooling an anthracene oil obtained by fractional distillation of coal tar and using a specific screw press to carry out crystal filtration and pressing simultaneously and continuously. CONSTITUTION:An anthracene oil obtained by fractional distillation of coal tar is cooled, crude anthracene (crystal) is continuously separated by using a screw press equipped with a tapered cone 7 at the outlet side of crystal of an inner cylinder screw 1, crude anthracene 15 useful as a raw material for dye is recovered from an outlet 8 of crystal and an anthracene oil 14 which is useful as a main raw material for creosote oil and from which crystal is removed is obtained from a filtrate outlet 10. Crystal well separated from oil is obtained without lessening sectional area of crystal outlet and lengthening a pressing zone and this method has effects such as elevation in productivity, reduction in labor, improvement in environment, etc.
