PURPOSE:To improve a resolution by compensating the deterioration in picture quality which is caused by the overlap of the apertures of picture elements due to the drift of an optical path or an image pickup element. CONSTITUTION:An optical path shifting means 6 shifts the optical path by a pitch of 1/2-1/n of the picture element pitch of the image pickup element 5, operates the image pickup element 5 whenever it shifts the optical path, obtains and fetches image data to an image memory 9. Through this operation, image data stored in a memory 9 with 2-n banks has information as much as 2-n times picture elements that the image pickup element 5 has. Since the data has noise components due to the overlap of the apertures of the image pickup element 5, a fining means 10 calculates the image data stored in the memory 9 with plural banks and takes out highly fine image data. Thus high resolution image data can be obtained which is equivalent to image data coming from picture elements having apertures with areas smaller than ones that the picture elements that this embodiment employs.
