PURPOSE:To perform low-loss coupling by mixing light beams from two linear polarized light source having the same wavelength by a polarization beam splitter and then supplying the obtained light for excitation and signal light to be amplified directly to a wavelength multiplexer. CONSTITUTION:The light beams from 1st and 2nd semiconductor laser diode modules 11 and 12 are so set as to become a P wave and an S wave on the boundary surface 17 of the polarization beam splitter block 15, and the both are polarization-mixed and outputted as the exciting light. A signal optical fiber 13c guides the signal light to be amplified and an interference filter block (wavelength multiplier) 16 multiples it with the exciting light from the block 15 on a wavelength basis. Consequently, the high-output exciting light is wavelength-multiplexed with the signal light directly, so the low-loss coupling becomes possible.
