PURPOSE:To shorten time when the opposite facsimile or a line is occupied by deciding whether the opposite facsimile or the line is used or not according to a line connection average time that is previously set in a line parameter memory for a line corresponding to the telephone number of the opposite party. CONSTITUTION:At the end of dialing, a control part 8 instructs a selection circuit 7 to switch to the side of a MODEM 5. Consecutively the control part 8 reads the connection average time corresponding to the telephone number out of the line parameter memory 10, and sets to an opposite nonresponse decision timer 11 a value obtained by adding to the average 25 sec, for instance, as a margin totaling time for linger detection on a reception terminal side, time for the transmission of a facsimile signal and time for the detection of a facsimile signal that a reception terminal on a transmission terminal side transmits. The control part 8 decides that the opposite facsimile is used at the timing when the opposite nonresponse decision timer 11 times up because the opposite facimile transmits no facsimile signal while it is used. Then the control part 8 opens the line.
