PURPOSE:To form a firm hardened layer without release on the surface of a base material by dipping the metallic base material coated with the compd. of a carbide forming element in a heated and melted reducing agent to deposit the carbide forming element on the surface of the base material, and further heating the material to diffuse and infiltrate the element. CONSTITUTION:Mg 2 is filled in the lower half of a heating furnace 1 as the reducing agent, titanium oxide 4 is coated on the surface of the base material 3 contg. C, the base material 3 is hung in the upper half of the furnace 1, and the furnace 1 is hermetically sealed. The pressure in the furnace 1 is reduced, then gaseous Ar 5 is introduced, and the inside of the furnace 1 is heated 6 to melt the Mg 2. The base material 3 which has been heated to the same temp. as that of the melt 7 in the furnace 1 is then lowered and dipped in the melt 7, and the titanium oxide 4 coated on the surface is reduced by the melt 7 of Mg. The furnace temp. is further increased to 800-1,100 deg.C to deposit, diffuse, or infiltrate the carbide forming element on or into the surface of the base material, and the base material 3 is pulled up. Water is then passed through a cooling pipe 8 to cool the inside of the furnace, the base material 3 is cooled in the gaseous Ar 5, and the diffusion layer of titanium carbide is formed on the surface of the base material.
