Apparatus for biochemical sequencing including gel electrophoresis apparatus in which the movement of the equal-length nucleotide bands within the gel (16) during the electrophoresis test is monitored by placing a large area semiconductor detector (25) adjacent to and parallel to the gel surface. The detector has strip electrodes (not shown) which extend orthogonally to the direction of movement of the bands and are spaced in the direction of the tracks formed by movement of the bands whereby the movement of the bands may be monitored.
