OLIGOMERIZATION OF OLEFINS AND SYNTHETIC LUBRICANT COMPRISING OLEFIN OLIGOMERS

Oligomerisation of a mixt. of 9-24C olefins comprising at least 99 wt.% internal olefins is carried out using a BF3 catalyst at 25-150 deg.C. The double bond of the olefin is randomly distributed throughout the carbon chain. The oligomers may be subsequently hydrogenated. A synthetic lubricant and its prepn. from the above oligomers are also claimed. The lubricant has a viscosity at 210 deg.F of 3.5-5.0 cS, viscosity at 25 deg.C of 25-40 cS, viscosity index of greater than 100 and a TGA value of greater than 80 wt.%. An alcohol, carboxylic acid or water as protonic promotor, esp. 1-butanol is used in conjunction with the catalyst. The oligomers have low viscosities at low temps. and high viscosity indexes.
