PURPOSE:To keep off any defective in accuracy of finishing due to deformation of a lower arm, by stopping electric discharge machining operation when a fact that the workpiece dropped on a work tank comes into contact with a conductive detecting tube is detected by a contact detecting device. CONSTITUTION:In the case where scrap of the workpiece 12 machined for EDM by a wire electrode 10 is dropped on a work tank 16 and comes into contact with a conductive detecting tube 40, the work tank 16 and this conductive detecting tube 40 are electrically conducted to each other, and when it is detected by a contact detecting device 42, electric discharge machining operation is stopped. Therefore, any failure in accuracy of finishing at a time when the scrap made by EDM of the workpiece 12 comes into contact with a lower arm and thereby this arm 30 is deformed is brought to nothing. In addition, any breakage in the lower arm 30 due to plural scraps dropped on the work tank 16 is preventable.
