The invention relates to a stain for colouring the surfaces of lignin-containing timber, one component of the coating being an alcoholic clearcoat, as a coatings raw material, which, in addition to phloroglucinol as essential component, contains acidic organic or inorganic compounds and sulphamic (amidosulphuric) acid. This colourless coating makes it possible for the wood surface to be simultaneously primed and given a stable coloration in a colour, which can be set prior to application, in the colour spectrum from light brown-yellow to dark brown-red, without altering the natural structure of the wood.
