PURPOSE:To prevent tear or missing of picture elements caused in dividing a long original into a page division as a prescribed length by setting a prescribed section to a long original, and overlapping the picture element data at the tail end of a preceding page onto the head of the next page. CONSTITUTION:An original 21 is converted into an electric signal by a picture element data read section 11 and a picture element data storage section 12 stores a picture element data one after another and gives it to a coding section 13. After all the picture element data of the state (n) are given to the coding section 13, it is taken as one page, that is, a section of the picture element data 22 is selected and the start of a 2nd page is started to given the content of the state (n) to the coding section 13 again. Thus, the content of the state (n) is overlapped onto the end of the picture element data 22 and the start of the picture element data 23 and the tear or missing of picture elements as a whole are prevented.
