Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV)-derived polynucleotide vectors and probes for detecting the presence of HCMV in a human cellular body sample are disclosed, as are diagnostic systems and methods for their use. The probes include a polynucleotide sequence that corresponds to an immediate-early protein gene or to a late protein gene operatively linked to an indicating means.
