PURPOSE:To improve the combustion efficiency of an engine by forming an about circular recess on the upper surface of a piston, and extendingly providing guide grooves from said recess in its tangential direction to effectively generate a violent swirl in a combustion chamber. CONSTITUTION:The middle of the upper surface 1a of a piston 1 is formed with a slightly deep circular recess 2, and four linear or circular grooves 3 are extendingly provided from the circumference of said recess 2 in its tangential direction at positions being apart from intake valves 5 and exhaust valves 6, and the middle of the bottom surface 2a of said recess 2 is provided with a circular protruding part 4 shallower than said surface 2a. Said piston 1 rising during a compression stroke causes squishing action due to said four grooves 3 to produce a air-fuel mixture current, and said grooves 3 to guide said mixture current to said recess 2. Thus the violent swirl of said mixture is generated in said recess 2, and ignited by an ignition plug provided above said protruding part 4. The combustion efficiency of an engine can be therefore improved.
