PURPOSE:To exclude a re-operation, etc., due to the lack of residual capacity of a magnetic disk by retrieving the storable capacity of the memory area of a housed magnetic disk and marking automatically the residual capacity at a residual capacity displaying label. CONSTITUTION:When a jacket 10 of a magnetic disk 2 is housed into a magnetic disk device, a loading signal is sent from a control bus 27 to a magnetic disk control part 20, a magnetic head 23 retrieves a history recording area, a residual capacity control motor 1 in the magnetic disk device is operated by the use condition and a shielding body 5 is moved. The light to come out from a light source 3 passes through the part where the shielding body 5 is opened and a residual capacity displaying label 13 is made photosensitive. For a label 13, a used mark 31 is stuck to the used part only, and a residual capacity area 32 covered with the shielding body 5 is not made photosensitive by the light source 3. Thus, the re-operation, etc., due to the lack of residual capacity of the magnetic disk can be excluded.
