PURPOSE:To obtain a latex useful as a binder, having improved water resistance, bond strength, etc., by subjecting a conjugated diene, an ethylenic unsaturated acid and an aromatic vinyl monomer as essential components to emulsion polymerization by the use of an organic polymerization initiator at the first state and an inorganic polymerization initiator at the second stage. CONSTITUTION:In the subjecting 20-70wt.% conjugated diene monomer (e.g. butadiene, etc.), 0.5-10wt.% ethylenic unsaturated acid monomer (e.g. acrylic acid, maleic acid, etc.) 10-50wt.% aromatic vinyl monomer (e.g. styrene, etc.) and 0-69.5wt.% another copolymerizable monomer (e.g. methyl acrylate, etc.) to emulsion polymerization 20-97wt.% based on total monomers of the monomers are reacted by using an organic initiator (e.g. cumene hydroperoxide, etc.) and the residual monomers are reacted in the presence of a copolymer latex of the reaction by using an inorganic initiator (e.g. potassium persulfate, etc.) to give a copolymer latex having 20-95% toluene-insoluble content and <=50 deg.C (low-temperature side) glass transition temperature of the copolymer component.
