NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by formula I (X is H, methyl, methoxy or Cl; Y is carbonyl, oxycarbonyl, sulfonyl, etc.; R is H, alkyl, aralkyl, alkenyl, etc.; n is 1-4). EXAMPLE:Chloromethanesulfonic acid 3-acetylphenyl ester. USE:A herbicide extremely controlling phytotoxicity to rice plant especially by benthiocarb, showing excellent stability and lipophilic nature. PREPARATION:A substituted phenol shown by formula II is reacted with a chloromethanesulfonyl halide or a chloromethanesulfonic anhydride in the presence or absence of a dehydrohalogenating agent (e.g. caustic soda) and a reaction solvent such as chloroform, etc., at -20-150 deg.C to give a compound shown by formula I.
