NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I [R<1> is H or methyl; X is COOR<2> (R<2> is H or alkyl) or CN, provided that X is CN when R<1> is H]. EXAMPLE:2,5-Bis(2-cyanoethyl)-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane. USE:Useful as a raw material for producing polyesters, polyurethanes, etc., or as an organic semiconductor. PREPARATION:A 2,5-substituted-cyclohexane-1,4-bis(dicyanomethylene) expressed by formula II is subjected to oxidative reaction in a solvent, e.g. acetonitrile, etc., using a halogen or N-halosuccinimide, etc., at 70-80 deg.C in an inert gas atmosphere to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
