PURPOSE:To automatically switch a mode at the time of reproduction by making a duty of a control signal variable, recording it as information for showing a mode instruction, decoding this signal at the time of reproduction, and obtaining a mode instructing signal of a high band mode. CONSTITUTION:In a duty variable circuit 18, a duty of a control signal 33 is made variable by a control by a program search instructing signal 19 or a high band instructing signal 20, converted to a code conforming with each instructing signal, and recorded onto a tape 5 by a control head 23. At the time of reproduction, a signal reproduced by the control head 23 is amplified, and by using its reproduced output 25 as a reproduction control signal 27, and a variation of this duty is converted to a reproducing code signal 29. Subsequently, said signal is decoded by a mode discriminating circuit 30, and a program search discriminating signal 31 or a high band mode discriminating signal 32 is obtained. In such a way, the mode can be discriminated with high accuracy, and by utilizing this result of discrimination, the mode can be switched automatically.
