PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of carbonization and, at the same time, to stabilize the quality of coke through promotion of carbonization of coke present in the oven mouth portion, by burning part of a combustible gas flowing in a gas space and produced during carbonization to maintain the gas space at a particular high temp. CONSTITUTION:A gas space 16 is provided between an insulting material 12 disposed on a metallic oven lid 11 on the side of an extruder of a coke oven and a heating plate 14 being in contact with the side of a charged coal layer or coke layer 13. Part of a combustible gas flowing in this gas space 16 and produced during carbonization is burnt with air or oxygen blown from a blowing nozzle 17 so that the temp. of the gas space 16 is maintained at 700-850 deg.C. This positively promotes the carbonization of coke present in the oven mouth portion, which enables the homogenization of carbonization, improvement in the productivity, decrease in the heat quantity for carbonization, and improvement in the quality of coke, thus improving the efficiency of carbonization of the coke oven and stabilizing the quality of coke.
