PURPOSE:To provide an agent for suppressing the increase in blood pressure, containing a pectinic acid salt as a main component, capable of suppressing the increase in the blood pressure without restraining the intake of salt and usable as a food additive without deteriorating the palatability of the food. CONSTITUTION:At least one kind of a pectinic acid salt selected from potassium salt, calcium salt and magnesium salt is added to a food in an amount of <=3pts., preferably 0.1-1pt. per 1pt. of the salt content of the food. In the case of a liquid seasoning, the use of beet pectin is preferable. The pectinic acid salt is produced from a refined pectin extracted from the leak, stalk, root or fruit of common higher plants. The blood pressure suppressing agent can be taken in the body in the form of a food such as jelly, jam, etc., or by adding to a processed food such as fish TSUKUDANI (a preserved food boiled down in soy), pickles, seasoning, etc. It may be taken after meals.
