PURPOSE:To perform guide display of select control and to prevent erroneous control of an automatic transmission, by a method wherein, based on a deciding result of each of a car speed, a running direction, and the select position of a select lever, flickering and the color of each display element in a guide display device are selected. CONSTITUTION:A car speed detector 2 and a running direction detector 3 are situated on the output side of a transmission 1, and a car speed detector 4 and a running direction deciding device 5 are connected to the output terminals of the detectors 2 and 3, respectively. A select position detector 7 and a select position deciding device 8 are connected, in order named, to a select bar 6. The output terminals of the deciding devices 4, 5, and 8 are connected to a control circuit 10. Meanwhile, the output terminal of the control circuit 10 is connected to plural display elements 21, 22-2n situated responding to a select position in a guide display device 20. This constitution selects flickering and the colors of the display elements 21, 22...2n according to the deciding results of the deciding devices 4, 5, and 8 to display a given select position.
