NEW MATERIAL:An optically active compound expressed by the formula (R<1> and R<2> each are independently 2-16C straight-chain alkyl group; n is 0 or 1; X is O-CH2, CH2-O or CH-O-CH2) and racemic modification thereof. EXAMPLE:Optically active n-hexyl 2-[4-(4'-n-octyloxyphenylbiphenyl-4-methyloxy) phenoxy]propionate. USE:This compound is chemically stable and colorless or light yellow, useful as a material for excellent liquid crystal compositions, exhibiting a wide liquid crystal temperature range, having improved compatibility with other liquid crystal substances and capable of extending the liquid crystal temperature by blending to constitute liquid crystal compositions having excellent response characteristics. PREPARATION:For example, a 4'-n-alkyloxy-4-halomethyl-biphenyl is etherified with an n-alkyl 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propionate in the presence of a base to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
