PURPOSE:To prevent the infiltration of air into an adjacent furnace during the threading operation and to shorten the time for purging by changing the operation of clamping devices in a method for clamping the strip between furnace bodies of a continuous treatment line for the strip from upper and lower directions and shutting off the atmosphere in the furnace. CONSTITUTION:Upper and lower sealing walls 2, 3 of the clamping devices provided between the furnace bodies A and B are respectively projected from the upper and lower directions to shut off the atmosphere in the furnace. The clamping force is weakened as shown in the figure to allow the threading of the strip at the time of clamping the strip 1, then making the necessary threading operation in the above-mentioned method. The sealing walls 2, 3 may be spaced very slightly (about the thickness of the strip 1) from the front and rear surfaces of the strip 1 for the above-mentioned purpose, but a catenary is usually generated when the strip 1 flows in a horizontal direction and, therefore, the lowering of only the wall 3 by about the thickness of the strip 1 suffices.
