PURPOSE:To aim enlarging the regulating range of spring force of a spring, by allowing a spring retainer to rotate relative to a rotary shaft so that the urging force of the spring against a movable sheave is held to be substantially constant. CONSTITUTION:On the rear surface side of a spring retainer 20 there is arranged a ring-like clutch disc pad 22 adapted to make contact with the rear surface of the spring retainer 20 so as to brake the rotation of the latter. Further, the clutch pad 22 is coupled to a driven cam 14 on an input shaft 22 through the intermediary of a rigid connecting rod 24. There is provided a spring retainer position regulating means 25 adapted to cooperate with the connecting rod 24 and the clutch pad 22, for regulating the spring retainer 20 with respect to an output shaft 2 in accordance with the movement of a V-belt 13 in association with the control of effective diameter of a drive pulley 3 so that the urging force of a spring 21 against a movable sheave 11 is held to be substantially constant. With this arrangement it is possible to enlarge the regulating range of spring force of the spring.
