PURPOSE:To obtain an ink ribbon cassette simple in construction, occupying little space and having a high operating speed, by providing an arm stopper capable of being moved relative to a tension arm guide, and a stopper arm for guiding an ink ribbon by supporting the ribbon between it and an arm part. CONSTITUTION:When an ink ribbon 1 is led out in the direction of an arrow A, a tension arm 2 is started for moving while compressing a spring 6 by the tension of the ribbon 1. When the tension arm 2 is moved by a predetermined length, a projection 5 of the arm 2 presses a stopper arm 3 to separate an arm part 3a from the arm 3, whereby a frictional force exerted on the ink ribbon 1 is reduced. Then, the spring 6 again pushes back the tension arm 2, and the projection 5 is separated from the stopper arm 3, so that a spring 7 pushes the arm 3 to press the ink ribbon 1 against a ribbon guide 10, thereby exerting a frictional force to the ribbon. Thus, a constantly fixed friction is applied to the ink ribbon 1, so that the ribbon 1 can be stably fed. This tension- controlling mechanism can be enclosed in a cassette while occupying little space.
