PURPOSE:To selectively form a uniform thin lithium nitride film only on the contact surface of metallic lithium kept in contact with a heat insulator by nitriding the metallic lithium at a low temp. in the contact state. CONSTITUTION:A heat insulating substance 4 is brought into contact with the surface of metallic lithium 1 and the lithium 1 is reacted with gaseous nitrogen at a low temp. in the contact state. The reaction proceeds selectively on the interface between the lithium 1 and the heat insulating substance 4 in gaseous nitrogen and a lithium nitride film 2 of a uniform thickness having no unevenness is obtd. along the contact surface of the lithium 1 kept in contact with the substance 4.
